Comparing rational numbers is such a broad topic! You can order ANY rational number. You could also have a group of rational numbers, that are all different, and you need to compare them. Where do you even start???
I wanted to make sure to give my students plenty of exposure to comparing all different types of rational numbers, such as, fractions, integers, decimals, percents and whole numbers.
The first thing we did is create a living number line. As students entered the room, they were given a number on a card. I made sure to use every type of rational number. Because this was my first year teaching this standard, I made up sentence stems for me to use as well as the students. I also created challenges that were exciting for the class to complete. An example of a challenge would be “would all the integers come to the front of the room and arrange yourself in order from least to greatest.” Another example would be, “Pick 1 fraction, 2 decimals, 3 percents and 1 integer to come to the front of the room and arrange yourself in order from greatest to least.” This was so much fun! I even did two challenges at once, one in the front of the room and one in the back, and we tried to see who could arrange their numbers the fastest. This was such a great activity that allowed wonderful conversations and reasoning. Students used their number sense rather than an algorithm, because they were up in front of a class, trying to put their numbers in order. They were actually thinking about the numbers!! If a group made a mistake, I would ask the class if they would change anything and why. We even had a couple of debates while students talked about why they thought a number was less or greater.
Comparing Rational Numbers! Living Number Lines and More!
I have put this activity, sentence stems, challenges as well as homework and an exit/entry slip in one convenient download! You can access it here on my TpT store!
I also developed stations for my students to work on while practicing to order and compare rational numbers. There are six stations! The first one is Integer War! This is a take on the classic card game War or Battle. Black numbers are positive and red numbers are negative. Students flip over a card and the greatest one wins both cards.
The next station is comparing temperatures. I got this idea from a STAAR question that asked students to order the temperatures in order from coldest to warmest. Students pull thermometers out of a bag and then order them on the mat.
I also made a comparing decimal station. Students pull out number cards and arrange the numbers on the mat. Then compare the decimals. Smaller decimal wins at this station!
I also made a technology enhanced station! This station allows students to order fractions. Then the students check their work by scanning a QR code.
I also created two mixed review stations. These stations feature all the different types of rational numbers. One station features spinners, while the other station features number cubes.
I did three stations one day and three stations the next day. That way the students had plenty of time to practice each station. I also had the students work in partners.
The last thing we did was a Google Interactive Project. I love using Google Projects for the students to practice and reinforce their math skills. The projects are always better than a worksheet. Students enjoy them and they don’t even think they are doing math! I have students work together on the project. I ask students to make sure that they stick to the same slide so that they are collaborating together. I have included a free sample of this Google Project that focuses on comparing and ordering rational numbers. The full version of this project is 18 slides, but I have given you a free sample so that you can see how awesome these projects can be when used instead of worksheets!
