Comparing rational numbers is such a broad topic! You can order ANY rational number. You could also have a group of rational numbers, that are all different, and you need to compare them. Where do you even start???
I wanted to make sure to give my students plenty of exposure to comparing all different types of rational numbers, such as, fractions, integers, decimals, percents and whole numbers.
The first thing we did is create a living number line. As students entered the room, they were given a number on a card. I made sure to use every type of rational number. Because this was my first year teaching this standard, I made up sentence stems for me to use as well as the students. I also created challenges that were exciting for the class to complete. An example of a challenge would be “would all the integers come to the front of the room and arrange yourself in order from least to greatest.” Another example would be, “Pick 1 fraction, 2 decimals, 3 percents and 1 integer to come to the front of the room and arrange yourself in order from greatest to least.” This was so much fun! I even did two challenges at once, one in the front of the room and one in the back, and we tried to see who could arrange their numbers the fastest. This was such a great activity that allowed wonderful conversations and reasoning. Students used their number sense rather than an algorithm, because they were up in front of a class, trying to put their numbers in order. They were actually thinking about the numbers!! If a group made a mistake, I would ask the class if they would change anything and why. We even had a couple of debates while students talked about why they thought a number was less or greater.
